USPC Equine Symposium & Convention - hosted by the Old Dominion Region
Roanoke Valley Pony Club officers were among the Local Organizing Committee and regional volunteer crew that hosted the USPC national convention in Norfolk, Jan 26-30!
The event offered a blend of in-person, live-stream, and on-demand educational opportunities, ensuring participants could conveniently attend based on their personal schedules. The new meeting format included many popular elements that have brought equine enthusiasts together for years: leadership training, equine education, comradery, and connection to equine enthusiasts from around the country. The convention is held each year at the end of January, hosted by a different USPC Region. Next year's convention will be hosted by the Mid-West Region in St Louis MO. |

Competitors included 19 riders, 4 stable managers, and 5 C Advisors representing 4 clubs/centers (Roanoke Valley, Holston, Sandy River, and Mountain Skyline), on a total of 5 teams. Additionally, we were so pleased to have many C level members who volunteered to fill many of the key positions, including all the HM staff, SJ judge and scribe, and dressage scribe. We are very proud of these members who continue to demonstrate the pony club spirit by giving their time to help teach and support the younger members. And we are so happy and fortunate to have great pony club friends Bernard and Laura served as TD and vet & dressage judge.

We had lessons in Dressage, Stadium Jumping, and Cross Country. We also experimented with a Western Trail Obstacle course, and had and opportunity for a quiet hack around the beautiful property. We had unmounted lessons in nutrition and travel, tail care, and cross country course walking. We cooled off with pool time and relaxed with craft time. And, as always, we enjoyed lots of great food with our friends!

RVPC Member at USPC National Youth Congress
The USPC National Youth Congress (NYC) was established in 1998 in order to recognize outstanding Pony Club members and build on the leadership skills they've developed throughout the years. The NYC provides intensive leadership training to 18-23 year old Pony Club members who have attained a National Certification (H-B, C+, C-3, B, H-HM, H, H-A or A). Members are challenged to apply their Pony Club experience to make meaningful contributions to the larger world and think about how they can continue to use the leadership skills developed through Pony Club in their school and future careers.
The National Youth Congress experience includes mentoring and networking with members of the USPC Academy of Achievement, Pony Club alumni from all over the country who are current leaders in a variety of fields. They also meet with members of the USPC Board of Governors.
This year, RVPC member Mandolin W was one of two members selected to represent the Old Dominion Region at the NYC. Mandolin says "NYC was a really cool and educational experience! Because the convention was held online, it was easy to attend and I was able to meet a lot more people than I would have otherwise. What really stuck with me most was learning about the careers and paths different people take through the equine industry, and how Pony Club always seems to bring people back to it! We also created proposals to improve Pony Club and the equine industry as a whole, which was very exciting to be a part of. The overall experience was super enlightening, and I'm thankful to have been a part of it!"
